The Liver and Spleen

The liver and the spleen are our filtration systems. This system's main function is to keep poisons from entering the body, which includes environmental chemicals and food source chemicals. In order to have a healthy filtration system, we have to keep it free of products that clog it. When the filtration system is clogged, you may feel very tired. You may have rashes that come out through the skin because the body will use the skin as a filtration system when the liver and spleen are stuck. A clogged liver and/or spleen can create a feeling of exhaustion as well as a feeling of flu-like symptoms. Another symptom of an unhealthy filtration system can be recognized as inability to think and focus. Pains and infections can also be a part of liver/spleen issues including headaches and sinus infections.

The foods to avoid to heal the Liver and Spleen
Avoid water that is treated with any chemical (this includes almost all public water systems). Make certain that your well is healthy. Water is our most important resource and we should drink four to six cups daily. Dark colored sodas should also be avoided.
Artificial sweeteners are chemicals and have to utilize the liver in order to get through the system. Natural sweeteners are a much better choice to the body including pure maple syrup, barley or rice malt, sucanat, Florida cane crystals, molasses, agave and the herb stevia. As a matter of fact, diabetics do exceptionally well on stevia and agave. (Word of caution, however. I find that the actual herb Stevia works best here. There are many processed stevias that don't test as well. The herb stevia is a green color).

Other artificial ingredients should also be avoided like colors and preservatives in food. They serve no purpose except to aggravate our filtration system.

Environmental chemicals should be limited. These include poisons, chemical fertilizers, polishers, chemical cleaners, and harsh perfumes. Basically, anything that has a chemical smell can do damage to an already over-burdened liver and spleen.

Not all, but many medications are filtered through the liver. Make sure you are familiar with side effects of drugs that you may be using.

Herbs & supplements that are beneficial to the Liver and Spleen
My favorite two herbs that help to de-clog the liver and spleen are dandelion root, burdock root or yellow dock root. I know that most people use Milk Thistle, but for the general cleaning in the beginning, dandelion root, burdock root and yellow dock seem to work more effectively. Burdock root and yellow dock root are more potent and should be considered when skin problems have erupted, as this is a clear indication that the clogging is considerable, or for people who have abused their liver over long periods of time. Dandelion root and yellow dock root are available in tea, capsule or tincture form. Milk thistle can be introduced after cleansing to help strengthen the liver/spleen area. Yellow dock root also helps detoxify the lymphatic system. It is helpful for chronic sinus and mucus membrane problems.

If the liver/spleen is very toxic, as you begin a detoxification program, you may feel ill for a day or two (something like you). If this should happen, begin very slowly, such as 1/4 cup of tea for a day or two and increasing slowly up to a full cup by the end of the week. If you are using a tincture, begin with one drop and work slowly up to five drops within a week or two. The important thing to remember is this is your healing journey and you can adjust it as you see fit. Red Clover can also be beneficial as a detoxifying herb especially when hormonal issues are also evident.

For very toxic systems, Michael's Products makes a few combination formulas that test out very well including one called L.V.R. and the other called Hepatic Factors. With severe digestive disorders, a tincture may be more appropriate to help get the herbs into the system more effective. Herb Pharm makes a combination called "Healthy Liver" that I often use in this case. When working with children, Herb Pharm makes a Dandelion Root Glycerite tincture that is safe and effective for all ages as well as pregnant moms.

Physical symptoms of Liver and Spleen imbalances
The most common complaints from those with liver and spleen imbalances include "I can't think or focus". An imbalance in this area will definitely aggravate our ability to learn, think or focus properly. Exhaustion can also come into play here along with the feelings of flu symptoms and skin rashes. Any skin rash is an indication of liver and/or spleen imbalance, including poison ivy! Do you ever notice how some people are so allergic to it and other's never get it.
Headaches and mucus membrane issues can signify liver/spleen imbalances.

Negative emotions that aggravate the Liver and Spleen
The liver is where we store our anger and frustration, so in order to heal a liver, you must work on transforming your anger back to joy. There are many reasons for anger, and the flowers that would assist can also be many. The anger flowers include: Agrimony, Beech, Chicory, Holly, Impatiens, Vine, Water Violet and Willow (refer to our website on "healing the emotions with flower essences.)

Our spleen stores our resentment and bitterness. The spleen is directly connected to our lymphatic system which in turn connects us to our mucus membranes. Hence, resentments eventually manifest in the sinus/broncial areas of the body. So in order to heal a chronic spleen condition, you must also heal your old resentments and bitterness. The flower essence for resentment and bitterness is Willow. Also, Chicory can be indicated for sinus/bronchial issues when the person is in a state of feeling victimized.

The flower essence Beech is helpful with throat issues especially swollen glands and sore throats.

my son tore his spleen will milk thistle help him heal faster?

Linda Wojcik, Nutritional Kinesiologist, Spiritual Intuitive said...

I think if I tore my spleen, the first thing I would think to help begin healing is the homeopathic remedy arnica. It speeds any type of healing.

Does arnica also heal fungal lung infections?

Linda Wojcik, Nutritional Kinesiologist, Spiritual Intuitive said...

To my knowledge arnica does not heal fungal infections of the lungs or any other fungal infection. It is mostly used for trauma to the body, and the sooner it is given, the better the results.

hello, this is amazingly helpful to me. what foods do you reccomend to eat for liver and spleen support. thank you

Linda Wojcik, Nutritional Kinesiologist, Spiritual Intuitive said...

What is more important is what you DON'T eat to heal the liver and spleen. Chemicals have to go in your food, water and environment. These chemicals put a stress on these organs. Organic beets would help along with green foods to nourish these organs. And pure spring water is essential to flush old energy through them.. 8 cups a day; 3/4 cup at a time to help gently flush.

Forgiveness, compassion, love and understanding are the energies that will help heal these body parts. First we have to recognize and move through the anger, frustration, resentments and bitterness. One step at a time!

Healing our bodies is not quite as simple as one, two, three. What I can share with you is that for a healthy liver and spleen ALL chemicals whether in food, water or environment must be avoided. Milk Thistle can be very helpful not only in detoxing but strengthening the liver. Emotions must be looked at as energy from frustration and resentments can get stuck in these body parts and then they won't be able to do their jobs. You can see more about emotions at my blog here:http://healingyou101-glandsandorgans.blogspot.com/2008/12/liver-and-spleen.html

Hi- I'd say I'm severe.. Skin irritations constantly (daily) my food irritation list is higher than non-food issues. Is there anything that's a deeper cleanse that you'd suggest?
I really agree and understand the emotional aspect of everything and try to improve myself constantly, I'm not a naturally negative person and am too forgiving, but I need help! I've been suffering and getting worse for about 8 years

The lastest research indicates that Agave Syrup is very toxic, in the same category as high fructose corn syrup, and should be avoided completely. For the purposes of your article, this is obviously very important.

hi interesting site,im curious to know what is your take on eczema?thanks

Linda Wojcik, Nutritional Kinesiologist, Spiritual Intuitive said...

Hi Naeem: Eczema like any skin irritation comes from the energy of anger which will clog our detox organs including the liver, spleen and lymphatic system. Hence the body must use the skin to detox to avoid self poisoning. Avoiding the foods that aggravate these body parts is essential. You can see them here: http://healingyou101.blogspot.com/2012/07/the-foods-that-feed-our-emotions.html

I find lymphatic cleansers may help move some of this energy one of which is yellowdock root. Of course working the vibrational energy of the anger itself is essential and the flower essences and tissue salts can be very useful. If this is something you would like to pursue, I would be happy to work with you. You can reach me at my email anytime: info@healingyou.com.

Dear Alanna: Thank you for your comment regarding Agave Nectar. And much like honey, there are excellent products out there and there are a lot that are very bad for our health. Having raised an extremely sensitive child, Organic Blue Agave and Pure Maple Syrup were two sweeteners that DID NOT affect Joshua's health and emotional state. Of course, everything abused can become abusive to the body. Sweeteners are meant to be used sparingly and in moderation.. something American's have a difficult time adjusting to... :)

Thank you for this valuable information! Interesting how even environmental toxins affect the spleen and liver.

Unfortunately, the shale gas boom transformed our suburbs into heavy industrial mining zones which spew very dangerous chemicals into our air shed, and possibly contaminate water supplies as well. These sites are in dangerously close proximity to our homes and schools. In fact, we started a blog to bring this issue to light.

I have no doubt that this increase in environmental toxins is having detrimental health effects on so many people in our city ranging leukemia, anemia, bone marrow cancer, as well as heart and lung problems, and unexplained symptoms such as headache, dizziness, nose bleeds, and general malaise. I can personally attest to the fact that it is a daily struggle living in the gas patch. I'm doing everything in my power to eat well along with nutritional supplementation to overcome what big oil and gas is doing to our community.

Thanks again for such helpful information!

Dear Fish Creek Neighbor: I have such compassion for those of you who are dealing with the shale gas boom. Pure water is essential to healing. Using herbs daily to help detox the system can help at some level such as dandelion root, burdock root, yellowdock root... the choice is dependent upon how toxic the effects on the body are. Green foods such as spirulina and chlorella can also help daily. One day I hope we awaken as a society to the realization that real food and pure water are essential to a healthy existence. Thank you for taking the time to write!

My son is 17 and is having issues with his eating. He feels full and sick to his stomach after eating a few bites. He can't gain weight and is very sluggish all the time. We are trying acupuncture to reset the spleen and getting his 3 treatment on Tuesday. Not sure if its working yet or not. His Qi spleen is way out of line. Need to find something to help him. His active life style is going down hill very fast. Need to put weight on him bad. Can you please help. We are also going to have some Bowenwork done on him as well. Just need something to clean and restart his spleen and liver functions!!!!!!!

Linda Wojcik, Nutritional Kinesiologist, Spiritual Intuitive said...

Dear Anonymous: Your son's issue could be related to the pancreas as well. When the pancreas is out of balance, it is difficult to digest anything. The energy this gland holds is "disappointment with one's choices with fear or concern for how their choices affect others." Any thought what that could be related to right now? I would be very happy to work with him to see if he can move some of this energy as well as test what he needs to eat and drink right now to get him moving. I happened upon your blog, by accident...or was it...

my question is this...do you know anything about LVR Essence, by Mediral?

I ask because a natural/osteo. RN gave me some to take, following EDS (electrodermal screening)... it all seems so strange to me...but I'm giving it a try. I have fibromyalgia and Allopathic medicine is only drugging me...so...
I'm wondering if it's going to help me...as I cannot research the ingredients ANYWHERE on line????

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Linda Wojcik, Nutritional Kinesiologist, Spiritual Intuitive said...

Hi Alicia: You can find information on the ingredients for LVR Essence here http://www.mediral.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/catalog-mediral-2010-04.pdf

Please also know that fibromyalgia energetically is usually connected to an imbalance in the 5th chakra where we have held tightly onto issues of control, judgments, criticisms, irritations, and rigidity. Usually those that contract this energy are from a family who is all of these things and the person is not allowed to express their anger. Hence it is stored in the 5th chakra muscular system.

If you would like to talk more about this, feel free to email me at info@healingyou.com. I would be happy to share more information with you.
